Current BAUN Council

The BAUN Council consists of a maximum of 11 members representing England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The Executive Officers of the association are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The President's post is held for a period of two years and council members are elected for a period of three years. Council members may stand for a second term of office.

Julia has 35 years’ experience as a registered nurse. She has worked in Urology since appointment as a surgical ward sister in 1990. She completed her MSc in Health Practice in 2007 and following this registered as a Non-Medical Prescriber. Her appointed as a Consultant nurse in Urology in 2007 led to the development and innovation in specialist urological nursing within Salford Royal Foundation Trust (SRFT). She has utilised opportunities to lead recently on implementation of Urology One-stop clinics and Out Patient Nurse led Botox clinics to improve efficiency and patient satisfaction. Salfords’ Urology Department was awarded the First Macmillan Quality Environment award (MQEM) nationally in 2014.

Julia is Governance Lead for Urology locally and is motivated to focus on safe delivery of care to patients. The most recent strategic project to reduce the incidence of catheter associated urinary tract infection (CaUTI) rates within the Trust has recognised her as ‘British Association of Urological Nurses in association The Urology Foundation Inaugural Nurse of the Year 2015.

As BAUN President she is taking the opportunity to listen. She is looking forward to continuing to support the delivery of high quality education for nurses, enabling nurses to improve their skills to support patient care and influence the development of strategies to improve patient safety and experience.

Urology & Continence Nurse Specialist.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Jane has worked in the Urology speciality since 1996. Initially within the operating  theatres and since 2001 as a Urology Nurse Specialist. Her role today is primarily nurse led continence and benign Urology clinics - including intravesical Botox, artificial slings in men and women, artificial sphincters in men, sacral nerve stimulation, female sexual function, intermittant & indwelling catheters. She has a BHSc in Healthcare Studies from Leeds University.

Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist
Theresa is a Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist working at South Warwickshire Foundation Trust, Warwick. She has worked in Urology in the field of Urology for twenty eight years. She moved to Warwick in 2001 to take on the role of Urology CNS.  She undertakes a variety of nurse led clinics on a rotational basis with her two colleagues. Clinics sessions include both cancer and benign; Nurse led stone clinic, LUTS, Urodynamics, Intravesical,  haematuria, prostate cancer follow-up, Flexible Cystoscopy both diagnostic and follow ups. Theresa has recently completed training to undertake botox injections into the bladder and is about to embark on setting up her own clinic to administer the treatments. Theresa is a non medical prescriber.

Uro-Oncology Nurse Specialist.

North Tyneside General Hospital

Pauline is a uro-oncology nurse specialist working at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. .She has been working in urology for over 20 years. As part of her role she reviews patients following a diagnosis of prostate cancer and performs flexible cystoscopies.  Specialist interests include prostate cancer and developing standards for competence in advanced roles​. She has been involved in writing BAUN Guidelines including leading on the Flexible Cystoscopy Guideline and is currently leading the Erectile Dysfunction and Intravesical Chemotherapy Guideline groups.

Specialist Urology Nurse Practitioner

Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Sue has been a registered nurse since 1987 and has worked in urology since 2004 when she was employed as a surgical care practitioner. The role has developed considerably since then and she now cares for both benign and oncology urology patients. She independently performs prostate biopsies, runs the one stop prostate biopsy clinic, coordinates the lithotripsy service and has a nurse led stone clinic. She chairs the MDT and coordinates the intravesical BCG treatments, and has a follow up erectile dysfunction clinic. She is the proud owner of a BSc in Health and social care and has been a non-medical prescriber since 2010.

Rotherham General Hospital
Jan began her nursing training in Sheffield and qualified as a State Registered Nurse in 1979. She moved to Rotherham Hospital in 1985. Jan has had a continuous nursing career within the NHS, working in Cardiology, Intensive Care, Accident and Emergency, School Nursing, Coronary Care and Urology. Jan has been within Urology since 1994 she is now involved in management and service development. Jan has developed various nurse-led clinics within urology, has a special interest in Andrology, Benign Urology and is a Non-Medical Prescriber and cystoscopist.In 1999, Jan was awarded the NMC Higher Level of Practice - MCGI , following completion of her MA in Health Care Practice.

Uro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust

Lucy began her nursing training in Colchester and qualified in 1994. Lucy has had a continuous nursing career within the NHS, working in Medicine, Urology, Stoma Care, and then her current role as a uro-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist.  She provides nurse specialist  support for patients following a diagnosis of a urological cancer (specialising in prostate cancer) Lucy has set up a nurse led service for the follow up of men with stable prostate cancer and has been on various national initiatives surrounding the care of men diagnosed with this disease, including the ‘informed decision making project’ . Lucy has previously been a committee member of the BAUN oncology sub group and has worked to improve education for health professionals through study days , reviewing  patient information and producing guidelines. Her special interest is education.  Lucy completed her MSc in Advanced Nursing Practice (uro-oncology) in 2000.

Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Emma has worked in Urology at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 1997. Initially on the Urology Ward and since 2009 in her current role as Benign Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist. Her clinics include Nurse Led Urodynamics, Erectile dysfunction, ESWL, Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation and teaching of Clean Intermittent Self-Catheterisation and Dilatation. Emma has her MSc in Health Care Practice and is also a non-medical prescriber.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner

As a registered nurse, Sherly has worked in different countries. Her main experience was in operating theatres for many years within multi specialities, in various roles including scrub/ circulating/anaesthetic and recovery. As a theatre sister/ manager she was part of the operational management/ leadership team of theatres and was also involved in setting up new units. This encouraged her to do a diploma in health services management through the Royal College of Nursing. She then completed an MSc in advanced health care practice from Edgehill university. She is currently doing her non-medical prescribing and a post graduate certificate in clinical education. Sherly also works as an associate lecturer in one of the leading universities in the North west of England.

In 2009, Sherly has extended her role as an urology practitioner. She was instrumental in the implementation of robotic surgery at the Royal Liverpool and Broad green Hospital, followed by which the urology team has won an award for innovative practice. It is to her credit that she assisted around 1000 robotic operations performed at the Trust. She also performs flexible cystoscopies and has independent clinics. Her special interest within clinical practice is urological cancers and its impact on patients and their family.

Fiona Sexton

Independent Urology Nurse Specialist

Fiona began working in Urology after qualifying as a nurse in Glasgow in 1992.   Following some time on the wards then in Research and Audit, she got her first job as a Urology Nurse Specialist in 1998, setting up Nurse Led Urology Services in Hairmyres Hospital.  She subsequently completed a BSc in Urology Specialist Practice.  Fiona moved to the North West of England in 2002 where she developed her skills in Nurse led assessment and follow-up of both benign and malignant urological conditions, including advanced skills in prostate biopsy and flexible cystoscopy and also completed an MSc in Cancer Care.  Fiona has been lucky enough to work in a wide variety of roles within urology including, most recently, along side the oncology team at Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston to improve the ongoing services and support for those living with and beyond urological cancer. She is currently working as an independent Urology Nurse Specialist, which gives her time to spend on the BAUN President role and also for lots of travel!
